The Mothership has landed on the Left Coast!
The Praxis Project recently celebrated it’s new California office by throwing an Open House that was attended my many friends, allies, and well-wishers from the Oakland, California community. The open house was held on Thursday, Feb 21, 2013, at the new space on 1001 42nd Street in Oakland. DJ Emancipacion was on hand providing the soundscape, while Chef Yulanda of Simply Bliss Catering served up delicious edibles for attendees.
“The Praxis Project has always been working in California,” says Makani Themba, Executive Director of The Praxis Project. “Opening a new office here really just formalizes a longstanding love we’ve had for organizing happening across California in communities of color.”
The office opening was only one thing to celebrate. The Praxis Project also welcomed its newest staff member, Gabriella Gutierrez, who will be holding down administration and logistics for the organization in Oakland.
Since 2009 The Praxis Project has helped leverage millions in support to many California based organizations through the CCHE (Communities Creating Healthy Environments) Initiative, a program funded by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Childhood Obesity Initiative. California based CCHE grantees include POWER-SF, Asian Pacific Environmental Network, Inner City Struggle, Chinese Progressive Association, and Community Coalition.
In addition, several Cali-based organizations have comprised the Technical Assistance and Evaluation team including Center for Media Justice, SCOPE, Berkeley Media Studies Group, The Data Center and Loyola Marymount University Psychology Action Research Center.
