Countdown to 2021 - Week of Dec 07th
#BEYONDTHEMOMENT: SDOH Countdown to 2021
We’re counting down to the new year by featuring how grassroots organizations use community-led and community-centered approaches to address the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH). As we count down, the Praxis Project is calling on everyone to give #BeyondTheMoment and donate to the amazing organizations that have continued to work tirelessly on the frontlines to address Social Determinants of Health (SDOH), support their communities, and forge the path towards justice.
housing justice - december 7, 2020
Housing justice is the assurance of stable, high-quality, safe, and affordable housing to residents of all income levels. Ensuring that one’s housing conditions are stable, high-quality, and affordable are directly tied to one’s health.
Basebuilding organizations are leading this work on the ground with the conviction that housing is a human right. Their efforts to advance housing justice include centering community voices and interests in housing developments, fighting gentrification, combating racial segregation and discrimination within the housing market, and building tenant power to address poor housing conditions and landlord exploitation. They are also fighting to protect affordable housing as well as promote community ownership of land and the decommodification of housing.
community infrastructure - december 9, 2020
Community infrastructure, also referred to as built environment, is a complex system of facilities, structures, and the environment of a neighborhood that contribute to the quality of life and overall safety and health of a community.
Community organizers are working towards just community infrastructure through a range of approaches, such as ensuring community perspectives are considered when local government is developing comprehensive or general plans. Basebuilding partners are advocating for broadband internet access, equitable building residential electrification policies, as well as accountability in public entities such as local banks and the Public Defender’s office. Organizers also advance community infrastructure by ensuring city, county, and local non-profits include immigrants and people with disabilities when developing disaster preparedness and response plans.
transportation justice - december 11, 2020
Transportation systems impact communities’ ability to access essential goods and services such as food, employment, health-related services, and community programs as well as shape environmental outcomes.
Community organizers are advocating for sustainable transit systems and infrastructures that center community needs and interests, connect members of a community and health promoting goods and services, and do not induce gentrification. They are also fighting to ensure transit systems are accessible and affordable, advocating for continued unionization of the transit system, promoting policies that support community walkability, and managing bicycling cooperatives.
