Countdown to 2021 - Week of Dec 21st
#BEYONDTHEMOMENT: SDOH Countdown to 2021
We’re counting down to the new year by featuring how grassroots organizations use community-led and community-centered approaches to address the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH). As we count down, the Praxis Project is calling on everyone to give #BeyondTheMoment and donate to the amazing organizations that have continued to work tirelessly on the frontlines to address Social Determinants of Health (SDOH), support their communities, and forge the path towards justice.
Healthcare Justice - december 21, 2020
Healthcare justice refers to an equitable health care system provides universal access to high quality, affordable, and culturally appropriate clinical care that is responsive to the social conditions that influence an individual and their community’s health. Access to health care empowers individuals and communities to actively engage in preventive and health-promoting activities, and also provides a safety net in the unfortunate event of major health crises.
Basebuilding organizers in our network advocate for healthcare justice by calling for improved access to affordable health insurance or Medicaid benefits. They also advocate to expand general health services to include culturally and linguistically appropriate services, food, nutrition, and wellness especially for student populations.
reproductive justice - december 23, 2020
Reproductive justice, as defined by Black women who have led this movement, refers to an individual’s social, political, and economic power to make decisions about their sexual and reproductive lives. This includes access to comprehensive and affordable care that supports a person’s autonomy to make decisions about when and if to have children, as well as the availability of services that are responsive to people’s culture, language, and identities.
Basebuilidng community organizers are focused on building access pregnancy centers, combating attempts to mislead patients from abortions and birth control, expanding student parental leave, working to reduce maternal and child mortality, and increasing the availability of services that are responsive to folks’ gender identity and sexual orientation. They also build the social, political and economic power of women, transgender or gender nonbinary folks, and other pregnant people so that they are full participating partners in building this movement.
