On Anti-Asian Violence & Lunar New Year
February 12, 2021
As we celebrate another Lunar New Year, The Praxis Project is heartbroken over the recent violent attacks on our Asian American community in the San Francisco Bay Area and across the country. The rise of anti-Asian rhetoric related to the coronavirus over the past year has resulted in increased hostility, discrimination, and harm towards Asian Americans, and our communities are in pain and afraid. We echo and support the positions of our grassroots partners and affirm that our strength and power lies in unity. We will not allow politicians and influencers to condemn anti-Asian violence by perpetuating anti-Blackness and by driving a wedge between our communities. It is our responsibility to fight against systemic racism and white supremacy in solidarity. We reject attempts to use these incidents to advance a pro-police agenda and preempt our work towards abolition, as the police have historically been and continue to be deeply harmful to Black communities, working class Chinatown residents, and communities of color generally.
As we celebrate the Year of the Ox, it is a reminder that we can face any challenge in unity with one another. The Praxis Project and our grassroots organizers are committed to cross-racial healing and solidarity, naming and addressing systems of oppression, and continuing to seek collective liberation. Now is the time for all of us to speak up, demonstrate our values, and take action to build community power and justice for all:
