Roots & Remedies 2021
Rooted In Community
Maureen completed her 200-hour flow yoga teacher training program in 2015 at Barefoot Movement, Oakland, CA. Since graduation, she has been teaching students the principals/practices of yoga through vinyasa flow classes. Vi = in a special way, Nyasa = to place. In vinyasa flow, the breath is paramount; the goal is to allow the breath to guide the movements of the body. Learning how to inhale/exhale deeply and slowly is a practical tool for mindful living any time of day, not just on the mat. Maureen’s teaching style is easy and practical - great for beginners - and she focuses primarily on the mind-body-breath connection involved in the practice of yoga.
In his book “Teaching Yoga,” Mark Stephens says: “If all you do as a yoga teacher is motivate and guide your students to breath consciously and feel themselves more subtly through the breath as they explore in the universe of their body, mind and spirit, they will be well served.”
Maureen lives in Oakland with her 16-year old son. She practices accounting on the side.
Black to Yoga exists to bring the transformational power of yoga to Black people of the Afrikan Diaspora.
We seek to develop a deeper representation of Black yogis within the larger yoga community, both as teachers as well as students.
We envision a world where Black people - everywhere - have access to this life-enriching practice.
