This video features AYPAL, a leadership development, community organizing and coalition building organization that seeks to create healthy, safe, and thriving communities. AYPAL empowers Oakland, CA's low-income Asian & Pacific Islander immigrant and refugee families. AYPAL's approach to youth development and empowerment includes Leadership Skills Development, Youth Civic Engagement, and Cultural Arts Activism. AYPAL believes that young people the courageous, creative, and hopeful leaders WE want to follow, and they support young people to support each other in making change.
AYPAL's May Art's Festival brings community together in public spaces threatened by gentrification and displacement around traditional cultural dances, guerilla theatre, spoken word, and murals. Each event integrates AYPAL’s political campaign work while uplifting youth voice through art and culture.
