Standing in Grief and Unity with the AAPI Community

Praxis Statement on the Atlanta Shootings

March 17, 2021

The Praxis Project is appalled and heartbroken over the fatal hate crimes committed against Atlanta's AAPI community Tuesday night by a white domestic terrorist. Six AAPI women lost their lives. We are holding our AAPI communities close to our hearts and mourn with the families of the victims. The histories of racist exclusionary policies in the U.S. and deep legacies of imperialism and ongoing militarized aggression remind us that violence towards our Asian/Pacific Islander community is not new. Our most vulnerable members are frequently the victims of the worst forms of racism and toxic misogyny, both of which were unspeakably expressed last night. With attacks and hate incidents against the AAPI community escalating at an alarming rate, we refuse to be silent. This means standing up to and dismantling white supremacy and all of its forms, acknowledging the deep connection between white supremacy and patriarchy, and recognizing that all communities of color have a united struggle against white supremacy, systemic racism, and gender-based violence.

We stand with all the BIPOC communities working in unity to explore safety in our communities and to collectively build a just society. *We* keep us safe. We stand with organizers supporting the AAPI community and invite you to join us in centering those in the AAPI community who are most impacted at the nexus of racism, misogyny, and exploitation and whose experiences are most often made invisible or erased. Join us in saying the names of the AAPI women we know about so far: Xiaojie Tan, Daoyou Feng, Julie Park, Hyeon Jeong Park.
