Daunte Wright

April 16, 2021

We are mourning this week over another Black person's life tragically cut short. Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Daunte Wright and the grieving communities in the greater Minneapolis area as they mourn this new loss amid tending to open wounds from George Floyd's murder less than one year ago. Daunte Wright, George Floyd, Philando Castile, and too many others, should still be alive today. Our communities deserve justice, an opportunity to heal, and to live free from the terror of police violence and white supremacy.

It remains abundantly clear that we are living with two disparate "justice" systems where traffic stops end in death sentences for Black people, where Chicago police executed 13-year old Adam Toledo with his hands in the air, and another where the shooters get to go home and are protected by an unfair judicial system that makes it hard to prosecute police. Systemic racism and violence against people of color is deeply engrained in policing. As long as police exist, Black and brown people are not safe. The advocacy and organizing growing out of the past year has already successfully defunded millions from police forces across the country to invest into community services, infrastructure, and public health. The Praxis Project remain steadfast in standing with our community organizing partners in their calls to continue and further dismantle the systems that protect police but not our communities, that limit accountability and prevent us from getting justice, and that permits state-sanctioned violence and institutionalized racism. We will continue to fight for the reallocation of resources into measures that support community safety and reinvestment into Black and brown communities. We will work to reimagine a world where our communities are valued, safe, and thriving, and where there is liberation and justice.
