Standing Rock, ND

October 7, 2019–october 11, 2019

In Fall 2019, two cohorts of 39 and 25 basebuilding organizers respectively were convened for a Learning Circle in Standing Rock, ND to build capacity in using political data and discuss approaches to civic participation beyond elections.

Trainings and capacity building

At this convening, participants were offered a training focused on utilizing data tools for civic engagement and campaigns.

Political Data Inc. (PDI) Workshop was led by InnerCity Struggle’s David Aguila and Jessica Panduro where they discussed integrated voter engagement, field strategy, how to develop good data, and strategic targeting for campaigns.

Civic participation

In addition to capacity building, participants also worked in modified focus groups to reflect on ways to advance civic participation in a society with perpetual state-sponsored violence and human rights abuses, while maintaining hope and inspiration. This Learning Circle also aimed to increase Praxis’ understanding and develop language for communicating the different ways that civic participation manifests in our communities and how Praxis and the broader field can support basebuilders in their work to increase civic engagement. In addition, this Learning Circle also prominently featured presentations, site visits, and discussions to learn about the ongoing resistance by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe against voter suppression in North Dakota and for protection of water resources.
