Moving from Disaster Preparedness to Disaster Justice: Centering Community & Racial Justice for a Transformed Future
 
From the inequitable impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic to fires ravaging the West Coast, from migrant children being forcibly separated from their parents at the border to continued police violence against the Black community, we have witnessed an array of disasters in the last year and beyond. This brief investigates the concept of “disaster justice” within the context of disaster preparedness and response, and how grassroots organizers have integrated disaster justice into their work.

The We Are Home campaign is a multi-racial, multi-ethnic, multi-generational coalition calling on the Biden administration and Congress to take immediate action to protect millions of immigrants who call this country home and end the cruelty of our interior detention and deportation system.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

  • The Fund for Trans Generations (FTG) from Borealis Philanthropy provides rapid response funding to trans-led organizations responding to rising needs and is accepting requests for COVID-19 specific funding. Grants range between $2,000-$10,000, are processed quickly and without strings to meet the pressing needs of trans communities of color. Learn more.
  • The Henry Luce Foundation is developing a new initiative focused on the challenges of building just, equitable, and inclusive societies. Groups and organizations addressing those challenges are invited to send the foundation information about their work at fundingopportunity@hluce.org no later than June 15.
